Rev. G. Truett Cocanougher

Truett was born April 16, 1941, in Perryville, Kentucky to George Wesley and Zelma B. Hundley Cocanougher. He graduated from Perryville High School a year early and attended Georgetown College studying speech and sociology. After graduating from

Georgetown, he then graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary with an M.Div. and fulfilled his calling to be a pastor.

He embarked on a lifetime of ministering to others in various churches throughout Kentucky. Among those congregations were Mount Pleasant Baptist (Keene, Ky.), Cecelia Baptist Church, Kentaboo Baptist Church (Florence, Ky.), Reid Village Baptist (Mt. Sterling, Ky.), Central Baptist Church in Maysville, and First Baptist and Calvary Baptist in Frankfort. After serving at Central Baptist for 91/2 years, he became Director of Missions for the Bracken Association. Missions was an important part of his faith, and

he lived it by serving on building a Habitat for Humanity home, a mission trip to Brazil and numerous Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief mission teams.

He did not serve alone. Every step of his ministry was taken with his late wife of 62 years, Jeanene (Nichols) Cocanougher. Together, they ministered to many through words and music. Often, he would conclude a sermon by nodding to Jeanene who would play a hymn for him to sing.

Family was his other great love. He took great pride in his daughters, Sara and Lela, and granddaughters Julia, Jovey and Laney. He genuinely would learn their interests

and with Jeanene, they would be found watching horse shows, plays and musicals, school programs, cross country meets and soccer matches, beaming with pride.

He had many interests outside of church. There were few things he could not fix and was an avid ham radio operator. He could be found doing car maintenance, tinkering in his garage or fulfilling Jeanene’s dream of converting the deck on their retirement home

in Frankfort into a screened-in porch.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter.

He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Sara and Steve McClain, Georgetown, and Lela and Joshua McFarland, Louisville; and granddaughters Julia McClain, and Jovey and Laney McFarland.

The family expresses their grateful appreciation to the staff of The Aldersgate at Wesley Manor for their love and care for Truett and Jeanene.

Visitation will be held at Schoppenhorst Funeral & Cremation Services at Okolona, 8519 Preston Highway, Louisville, KY 40219, on July 27, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Followed by a funeral service to begin at 5:00 pm.

Truett will be laid to rest, next to his beloved wife Jeanene, at a later date in the Versailles City Cemetery in Versailles, Kentucky.

In lieu of flowers and customary expressions of sympathy, the family requests that donations in honor of Truett be made to the Kentucky Baptist Convention Disaster Relief.
