He is survived by his new wife, Joan Hughes-Denton; his family, Kelsey & Rhett Higgins; grandchildren, Keegan, Keith and Ginger Hughes and grandson, Enzo; and lots of close family and dearest friends.
Bert worked 15 years at Kroger in Middletown, KY. He had hard working ethics and hard playing ethics too. Bert never met a stranger and enriched the lives of those he acquired as friends easily.
After 13 wonderful years with Joan, they wed in August 2026 on the beach in Bradenton, Fl. He also loved his time spent with his fellow poker players at River City with special relationships with Dave, Kaye, Rus and Michelle to name a few. Bert was a great storyteller and his past was quite interesting to say the least. He was a loud kind of guy with a soft touch and compassion toward the needy.
Per Bert's wishes, cremation was chosen and visitation will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at Arch L. Heady and Son at Westport Village (7410 Westport Road, Louisville, KY 20222) from 2:00 to 4:00 pm with a memorial service in their Chapel at 4:00 pm. At his request, a Celebration of Life will be immediately following at Bearno's on Taylorsville Road in Jeffersontown, KY.
