Born at St. Anthony Hospital in Louisville, Ted was a lifelong Kentuckian who loved his family, cherished his friendships, and never passed up the opportunity for a good conversation or a great story.
A dedicated businessman and entrepreneur, Ted owned and operated Ryan Insurance for over 40 years. He was forever grateful to his dear friend and mentor, Jim Ryan, who gave him the opportunity in the insurance business.
Ted enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. An avid tennis player for many years at Blairwood, he also loved Kentucky basketball, Notre Dame football, and horse racing. He enjoyed his weekly lottery tickets, his favorite restaurants, and gathering with friends for breakfast and conversation.
Ted loved the sunshine and treasured his vacations to Siesta Key Beach in Florida. Nothing, however, brought him greater happiness than his family, especially his beloved grandchildren. He spent countless summer days taking them to the pool, where food and ice cream were plentiful and Paw was always happy to be in charge.
Known for his wonderful storytelling, playful teasing, and the affectionate nicknames he gave those he loved, Ted had a personality that was truly his own. He also had a soft spot for animals, faithfully feeding stray cats and nighttime visitors which included raccoons, opossums, and an occasional skunk.
Above all, Ted will be remembered for his extraordinary generosity. He was always willing to help someone in need. The stories of his kindness are countless, and many are only now being shared with his family by ones he quietly touched. His generosity was not simply something he practiced; it was part of who he was.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Catherine Cox; his nine brothers, Charles, Fred, Harold, Larry, Bob, Jerry, Kenny, Joe, and Paul; and his beloved grandson, Blake Oviedo.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Patricia Cox; his sisters, Mary, Margie, and Theresa; his six children, Catherine Oviedo (Vince), Jean Filer-Smith (Doug), Lesley McFerron (Mark), Christy Furlong, Ryan Cox, and Genny Sanders (Jerry); along with 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Ted leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, generosity, and a lifetime of memories. His greatest gifts were not the things he accumulated, but the lives he touched and the family he loved so dearly.
