

Allen was a devout Catholic who grew up in the Highland Park area, went to St. Leo's Catholic School and Church, then attended Desales High School before joining the Army at the age of 18. Allen proudly served his country in the Army for 23 active years and 26 1/2 years Civil Service before retiring as a Master Sergeant in 2010. Allen shared his patriotism with his family and friends and loved visiting the Patton Museum.
Allen was an avid basketball player. He played for the Army, and then coached his three children and many others throughout his life. He ran marathons well into his 60's and was an usher at St. Tim's and Our Lady of Consolation (OLC). He enjoyed going to the casino, a good Western movie, Native American artifacts, U of L sports, and painting - especially mountain landscapes. Nothing compares to Allen's love of his grandchildren!
He was preceded in death by his parents; his In-laws, Floyd E. and Margaret J. Perrot; and his brother, Patrick Ronald Matthis.
Left to cherish Allen's memory is his loving wife of 58 years, Helena "Betty" Matthis; children, Lisa Flatt (Robert), W. Allen Matthis II (Paula), Wesley Matthis (Mary); grandchildren, Cory Radmer, Miranda Flatt (Matt), Kylie Flatt (Cody), Allee Matthis Lee (Tyler), Trey Matthis, Brody Matthis, Cameron Rockey, Margot Matthis; great-grandchildren, Millicent Kluckowski, Augustine Kluckowski;siblings, Dennis Matthis (Charlene), David Matthis (Ann-Dec.), Christopher Matthis (Tossy), Carol Matthis; many extended family and wonderful friends.
Visitation will be held at Advantage Funeral Home - Hardy Chapel, 10907 Dixie Hwy, 40272, on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 3pm to 7pm. His Funeral Mass will be Friday, May 1, 2026 at 11am at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 5433 Johnsontown Rd. 40272. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, 2501 N. Dixie Blvd, 40160.
