Services for Abbott L. Hargraves, Sr., will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 14, 2018 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Jim McDonald officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Hargraves was born February 14, 1927 in Beaumont, Texas, the son of the late Stella (Ingalls) and Walter L. Hargraves. He passed away Sunday, September 9, 2018 at his residence.
Mr. Hargraves was retired from Security & Guaranty Abstract Company. He was awarded the Hugh L. George Award for lifetime service with land surveying and served as President of the Texas Professional Survey Association. He also helped write the Book of Standards for Texas land surveyors to follow. Mr. Hargraves was a founding member of Loop 287 church of Christ and served as Elder for more than 30 years. His main focus in life was to serve his Heavenly Father, his church and his family. Mr. Hargraves served his country in the Merchant Marines.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Elma Hargraves of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Abbott (Al) and Judy Hargraves of Kerrville; daughter and son-in-law, Shelia and Tony Torres of Lufkin; grandchildren, Carl and Zelma Hargraves of Dayton, Washington, Luanne Hargraves of Austin, Alyson and Micheal Evans of Bryan, and Amanda Torres and boyfriend, Gabriel Tovar of Lufkin; great-grandchildren, Shawni Hargraves of Clyde, Winry Evans and Lincoln Evans, both of Bryan; special lifelong friends, Jim and Betty McDonald of Lufkin; and a number of other family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hargraves was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
Pallbearers will be Michael G. Parker, Jeff Harkness, Lynn Chesser, Ron Chastain, Gabriel Tovar and Carl Hargraves.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Elders and Deacons of Loop 287 church of Christ.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
