Alta was born December 25th, 1929 in Lufkin Texas, to the late Thomas and Pollie Mullins.
Atla worked at Whites Warehouse for years before retiring and had met many friends that were dear to her heart. She enjoyed fishing, cooking, sewing, traveling, shopping, volunteering, spending time with family doing puzzles or playing table games, going to church and listening to gospel music. She was a member of the Chestnut Drive Baptist Church in Lufkin Texas. In addition, she lived her life to the fullest having worked at Perry Brothers downtown Lufkin, the Candy Kitchen on Raguet, cleaned offices at Lufkin Industries and volunteered over 4000 hours of service managing the popcorn distribution to the community at Memorial Hospital especially known as “the Popcorn Lady”. She also volunteered at the Senior Citizen’s Center in Lufkin Texas.
Alta taught many of her grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews how to fish and would often ask neighbors, friends and family to join her at “the pond” near her home or any water hole available. She never shied away from sharing her cooking secrets with a little more salt, bacon grease and hog jowl especially for her famous Turnip Greens. Alta made amazing art out of sewing and many people received personalized craft gifts from her hand made items. She could sew without a pattern. She made traveling fun for everyone, often saying “I’m ready to go and I’m just along for the ride!” Some of her favorite vacations were cruises to the Caribbean including Cozumel, Mahogany Bay, the Grand Caymans, Alaska and Canada. Alta would never miss a “blue light” special as bargain shopping was key. Shopping with Alta was two fold: looking for the bargain, and searching for her as she was like Houdini on the aisles. If she wasn’t fishing, traveling, volunteering, cooking or shopping we could find her at one of her grandchildren, nieces or nephews events – graduations, birthdays, sporting events, weddings, baby showers, recitals or attending gospel concerts with her friends. Alta was a servant and loved by so many people, she touched many lives in her 94 years. In her last 17 months of life she was known as “Momma” to the caregivers at Cypress Assisted Living who loved and cared for her as if they were caring for their own Mom.
Alta’s family extended through 5 generations. Alta was known as “Mom” by her Sons, Nannie or Nannie Bob by her grandchildren and Daddo by her nieces and nephews. Survivors are her Son, Paul Harrison, and Daughter in Laws Chloetta and Linda Harrison, and her Sister in Law, Ruth Mullins. Alta was confident that heaven would be her final destination and she is dancing in the sky with her Parents, Son, and Brothers. She is likely inviting her heavenly family and loved ones to her mansion in the sky. She wants us to all “look for her” when we get there and will be excited to reunite with us again. “I love you too baby” were her last words when it was time for her to depart this earth. We know Heaven has our Hero.
