Ben Ray Broughton

He was born in Dawson, Tx. November 20, 1934, to Herschel and Genie Broughton. He was the 3rd of 4 brothers. He lived in Dawson through high school (where he was nicknamed “The Bone”) then attended Navarro Jr. College. Ben also served his country when he was in the army for 2 years.

He started his professional career with the Department of Public Safety and was promoted to Sergeant and retired in 1991. When he wasn’t serving his community, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his family. He was a longtime member of First Christian Church in Lufkin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Lynne Broughton, who died March 27, 2024; and by his brothers James Broughton of Anahuac, George Hatley Broughton of Amarillo, and Joe Britt Broughton of Morgan Mill.

He is survived by his children, Ben Michael Broughton and wife Cindy of Dripping Springs, Jay Broughton and wife Viridiana of Conroe, and Jeani Haak and husband Robyn of Lufkin; grandchildren Whitney, Ashley, Kristopher, and Kaden; and great-grandchildren Jennifer Rose and Alexander Walker.

Ben leaves many friends that were special to him and will always be remembered for his stories that he loved to share with everyone. He also taught many people to play 42 dominos.

In addition to loving his family and many friends he also loved and spent time with his beloved dog Eve.

A memorial service will be held for Ben on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at 2:00 PM at First Christian Church.
