

Maw was an avid seamstress and quilt maker. She passed out her quilts to all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Maw was a social butterfly. She enjoyed playing "42" with her sister and friends, and loved attending her grandkids events. She became everyone's grandma and she never knew a stranger. While at home, she enjoyed her daily quiet time with the Lord and loved having visitors. She was a life-long member of Redland Baptist Church and continued her worship at home.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Toni and Ronnie Kirkland of Lufkin and June and Tony Ramirez of Harlingen; daughter, Sherry Scallan of Hessmer, LA; daughter-in-law, Betty Bowers; 21 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Marjorie Mattern and Elsie Polland; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, P. W. "Ned" Bowers; son, Oliver Linwood Bowers; and daughter, Bonnie Meldrum.
Services for Mrs. Bowers will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2011 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Fred Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Walker Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
