Jan Wilkerson was born July 16, 1953, the youngest child of Clarence and Rachel Kraus Woodrome of Chester, Texas. Jan died September 24, 2023. Visitation will be held on September 30 at 4 p.m. Private burial will be held prior to the service.
Jan was a 1971 graduate of Chester High School and a 1973 graduate of Angelina College School of Nursing.
She served as a volunteer for many organizations across the state, but was best known for her love and dedication to Diboll Schools. She helped develop the volunteer program for the district and worked diligently for the Diboll PTSA for over 40 years.
Jan was the centennial president of Texas PTA during 2008 – 2010. Her love for the organization helped bring many changes to the association. Jan was a Texas Life Member and extended service member. She also held a Lifetime Achievement award from the National PTA. In 2010, Jan was named a “Yellow Rose of Texas” by the Governor of Texas. Among other awards she received, she was honored by the Texas Classroom Teachers Association as a “Friend of Education.”
She is survived by her children Trey Wilkerson, Michele Wilkerson of Diboll and their children Annabeth and Ryan; Dr. Krista Wilkerson of San Antonio, and Melanie and Greg Blakeslee of Marquez with their children, Jake, Neely, Jessica, and Jamie.
One brother, Don and Sadie Woodrome of Chester, Texas with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Mother-in-law, Jakie Wilkerson, and by Jan’s sisters by choice, Fran McClain, Lynda Coleman, Lupe Morales, and Fran Dahl.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Burlon Wilkerson; parents, and sister and brother-in-law, Sibyl and Rae Trammell of Chester; and father-in-law, RV Wilkerson of Diboll.
Jan had a passion for the poor. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice that provides food, clothing, and health care for those in need. Donations may also be made to the Diboll PTSA Scholarship Foundation.
