Joe W. Hamb Jr.

Services for Joe W. Hamb, Jr., 79, of Lufkin, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2013 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Blackie Cranford and Bro. Brad Forrest officiating. Interment will follow in the Denson Cemetery in Grapeland, Texas with military honors. Please meet at the cemetery at 1:30 p.m.

Mr. Joe was born September 29, 1933 in Grapeland, Texas, the son of Flora Ellen (Green) and Joe Wornie Hamb, Sr. He passed away January 12, 2013 at his residence.

Mr. Joe or Uncle Joe, as he was known to all who knew and loved him, will be remembered for his kind and generous spirit. Mr. Joe always loved the kids in his neighborhood and had a heart for mentoring them and their families. He used his gift of compassion to seek those in need. He did everything in his power to see that it was tended to. He also enjoyed gardening, yard work, tinkering with the mower and working at the church. Mr. Joe proudly served his country in Vietnam with the United States Army and retired after 27 years. He was a member of Chestnut Drive Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Lillian Hamb of Lufkin; son, Thomas Ray Hamb and wife, Debbie of McPherson, Kansas; brother, Denny Hamb and wife, Maxine of Dallas; sisters, Luna McCully and Loretta Page, both of Canton; brother-in-law, Carroll Patrick of Grapeland; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Joe was preceded in death by son, Joe Steven Hamb; sisters, Mary Ann Patrick and Clara Card; and brothers-in-law, Bill Page and Wesley McCully.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Patrick, Denny Hamb, Ricky Hamb, Kevin Nelson, Harold Nelson and Melvin Brock.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Joe's memory may be made to Hospice In The Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, TX 75904 and will be appreciated.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Nelson and J. C. Connor.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
