

Services for Joe Melvin Hollis, 85, of Lufkin, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2014 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Trinity County.
Mr. Hollis was born December 23, 1928 in Trinity County, Texas, the son of the late Winnie Mae (McDougal) and Raymond Melvin Hollis. He passed away Saturday, November 22, 2014 in a Houston hospital.
Mr. Hollis was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a caring friend and neighbor. He was retired from Hudson Independent School District, where he was a security officer. He served his country in the United States Army, serving in Okinawa and Korea during World War II. He was a member of American Legion #191, the V.F.W. and the D.A.V. He was a member of Union Road Church of Christ.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond Melvin and Billie Hollis of Lake Jackson and Donald Milton and Donna Hollis of Wharton; daughter, Dorothy Ann Singleton of Alaska; daughter and son-in-law Nancy Lyn and Coy DuBose of Huntington; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hollis was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Edith Hollis; brothers, Archie Granville Hollis, Wirt Hollis, Daniel Hollis, and Wayford (Buck) Hollis; and sisters, Sarah Lvetishie Weeks and Ezell Durham.
Pallbearers will be Gerald Hollis, Grover Hollis, Wayne Durham, Danny Hollis, Phillip Hollis, David Hollis, Randy Hollis, Christopher Hollis and Sean Hollis.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
