Services for John R. Pounds, Sr., 91, of Lufkin, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 15, 2016 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Horace Fletcher officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Pounds was born February 19, 1925 in Wells, Texas, the son of the late Candise (Chandler) and William Pounds. He passed away Sunday, September 11, 2016 in a local hospital.
Mr. Pounds was employed with the Lufkin Paper Mill as a fire marshal for more than 25 years. He was also the owner of Pounds Nursery. For many years he was known as “The Flowerman”. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Mr. Pounds was a member of the Lufkin Masonic Lodge 669, A.F. & A.M. for more than 60 years.
Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Sue Pounds of Lufkin; son, John R. Pounds, Jr. and wife Dianne of Horseshoe Bay; grandson, Trey Pounds and wife Kimberly; granddaughter, Kendall Barney and husband Jeff; great-grandchildren, Campbell Pounds and Korbin Barney; stepsons, Bobby Harris and wife Robbie, Carl Harris and wife Dorothy and Lynn Renfro and wife Ann; and a number of other family members.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Pounds was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Trudy Pounds; stepson, David Wayne Renfro; and numerous brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers will be Lynn Renfro, Carl Harris, Larry Jansen, Mike Barbe, Charles Ray Flowers, Charles Flowers, Jr., Robert Thigpen, and Shane Thigpen.
Honorary pallbearer will be Logan Flowers.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
