Julian Dean Bullock

Services for Julian Dean Bullock, 92, of Lufkin, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 21, 2013 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Harold Hancock officiating. Eulogies will be offered by Reagan McClenny and Steve Bergman, with congregational singing led by Jerry Johnson. Interment will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery in Alto. Dean was born February 16, 1921 in Gilmer, Texas to the late Easton Dixie and Rosa L. (Doud) Bullock. He passed away Sunday, November 17, 2013 in Lufkin. Dean grew up in Alto, Texas where he met his wife-to-be, Lucille Dover, in the 7th grade. They graduated high school in May 1938 and were married a year later on May 20, 1939. Dean volunteered for the United States Navy during World War II and served 19 months in the Pacific Theatre. Upon his discharge, Dean and Lucille operated a successful “5 and Dime” store in Abilene before moving to Nacogdoches, where Dean attended Stephen F. Austin State University. Dean also studied at Abilene Christian College and the University of Houston, where he earned his B.S. degree and attended law school. Dean’s commitment, however, was to preaching the gospel. Shortly after his marriage to Lucille, Dean was baptized into Christ in Orange, Texas and began preaching in 1947. He worked as a local preacher in Durant, Oklahoma and Angleton, Houston, Grand Saline, Borger, Sinton, West Columbia, Bay City, Lindale, Huntington, Nacogdoches, and Lufkin, Texas. He was also active and successful in meetings and lectureships throughout the United States and in the training of young men to preach the gospel. Though he had retired from “full-time” work, Dean continued to serve the Lord in preaching and teaching in recent years, and was a member of the Timberland Drive Church of Christ. Greatly “Beloved”, Dean will be sorely missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Ima Lucille (Dover) Bullock; granddaughters, Jana Richards of Kerrville and Cheryl Miller of Lufkin; great-granddaughters, Sara Pope and Katie Davis; great-grandson, Victor Machado and wife Shayla; four great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Eloise Manard and husband Jerry of Henderson; niece, Vickie Stigg; and numerous other nieces, nephews, friends, and brethren. In addition to his parents, Dean was preceded in death by his nine brothers and sisters; and his daughter, Ima Jean Joiner. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Condolences may be offered at Services have been placed in the trust of Gipson Funeral Home

Dear Sis. Lucille,

Having known Dean my whole life was one of the greatest pleasures I had. I remember his deep preacher's voice, forceful and strong, but such a kind gentle manner. I'm sorry I'm late posting this I was in the hospital in Dallas for the past couple of months (I am my mother's child and share bad heart genes). You've been in my thoughts and prayers since I heard a few days ago.
