

After graduating from Mineral Wells High School in 1935, she worked for a short time as a switchboard operator for the telephone company until she met and married Walter Lee Atwell. Kathleen and Walter spent the majority of their married life in Lufkin, Texas where she and Walter were longtime, active members of their church, First Christian Church. Kathleen was a devoted wife, loving mother, and loyal friend.
She was active in the community and participated in all of her children’s activities. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, hosting the bridge group in her home, participating in the Christian Women’s Fellowship at church, and being with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons, James Frank Atwell and his wife Marty, Thomas Luther Atwell and his wife Lissa, along with their children Elizabeth and Robert, and David Glober Atwell and his wife Jeanie, along with their children Michael, Blake and Andrew.
Mrs. Atwell was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband Walter; oldest son, Walter Lee, Jr.; and her sisters, Audene Ferguson, Katie Krough, and Mimi Stone.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 1300 S. First Street, Lufkin, Texas 75901.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2012 in the Chapel at Pinecrest Retirement Community, 1302 Tom Temple Dr., Lufkin, Texas 75904, with Reverend Stephen Lantis officiating.
