

Mary Evelyn Matthews, 84, of Lufkin, daughter of the late Mary C. (Canterbury) and Willie T. Hammontree, was born January 19, 1928 in Athens, LA, and passed away September 22, 2012 in a local nursing facility.
Mary Evelyn was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her children were her life. She enjoyed sewing, planting flowers and gardening. She was retired from Walmart as a cashier. She was a member of First United Pentecostal Church of Lufkin.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Karen Matthews of Waco, Texas, Gary and JoAnn Matthews of Houston, Texas, Randy and Kim Matthews of Lufkin, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Roy Bonadona of Denham Springs, Louisiana, Shirley and Brian Ward of Lufkin, Texas; nephew, Bob Hammontree of Schulenburg, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
Mary Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, W. T. Hammontree.
Pallbearers will be Charles Whitehead, David Crawford, Kevin Crawford, Bob Hammontree, Jody Cook and Derrick Scott.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mrs. Matthews' grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services for Mary Evelyn will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 25, 2012 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend R. G. "Bud" Davis, Jr. and Reverend Clark Bynum officiating. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
