Ramer Olena Dew, a fifth generation Texan through the Wilson family, was born May 29, 1931, in Lockney, Floyd County, at the base of the Panhandle in West Texas. Her parents were John Wesley and Gertrude Desdia (Brown) Dew. Both of her parents passed away by the time she was 7 years old. She lived with her grandmother, Martha Olena (Wilson) Brown, along with her siblings, Billie Rachel and JP (John Phillip).
Olena loved West Texas and living on the Cap Rock Plains, with endless expanses and fields. She shared stories of snow, sand storms, picking cotton, and horny toads she and JP would catch. She vividly remembered December 7, 1941, and the struggles during “The War”. In July of 1944, Mamy Brown, JP and Olena moved to East Texas, near Wells, but she never quit missing Lockney.
Olena married the love of her life, William Henry Ayers, in 1947, and they made a home in Wells. She was an expert seamstress, creating beautiful clothing, including wedding dresses and ball gowns for countless folk in the area. She could see a photograph of an item and recreate it exactly!
Bill and Olena moved to Hudson in 1970 and she went to work at Beall’s Department Store, retiring after 24 years.
Olena was a true redhead, strong spirit, fiery temper, wicked sense of humor. She adored her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Wells, and the Eastern Star.
Olena is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill, and her brother, JP.
Olena is survived by her daughters and spouses, Phylis Golden and Allen Moore of Dickinson, Susan and Michael McCravy of Hudson; grandchildren, William Clay and Amanda Golden, Reagan Golden, Rachel and Nathan Stafford; and her Golden great-grandchildren, William Tyler, Haley, Keith, Blake and Alexia; her sister, Billie Rachel and husband, Joe D. Hamrick of Amarillo; sister-in-law, Myra Dew of Garland; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
There are no words that can truly convey the depth of gratitude our family feels toward Polly Glover for her unwavering care of our Mother; to Rachel Massingill, Charlene Buck and Brandie Sorrell who stepped in to help; and to the staff of Harbor Hospice.
Please wear GREEN on June 13, 2017 – Olena’s favorite color.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Gipson Funeral Home.
Services have been placed in the trust of Gipson Funeral Home.
