Arlene Mary (Connolly) Mageary, age 86, of Lynn, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Born in Winthrop on October 29, 1939, and raised in Somerville, she was the daughter of the late William and Mildred Connolly and graduated from Somerville High School in 1957. After meeting at a local dance, Arlene was swept off her feet by her late husband, Edward “Skip” Mageary. Together, they raised three beautiful children and shared 65 years of marriage. We take comfort in knowing they are together again.
Arlene was a devoted mother who worked as a stay-at-home mom and lunch aide in Lynn Public Schools. When her children grew up, Arlene had a long and dedicated career at Eastern Bank, where she made many friends. Arlene was adored by everyone who knew her. She cherished spending time with family and friends, whether gathered for family events, going out to lunch with the ladies, or enjoying a round of golf, a game of cards, or bocce. Arlene especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. She treasured watching and supporting them in all of their activities, always showing up to cheer them on or brag about them behind their backs. Arlene looked forward to spending winters in Naples, Florida with her husband, where she greatly enjoyed the warmth. She also loved baseball and the Patriots. Above all, she was a woman of deep faith and a longtime communicant of St. Pius V Church.
Arlene’s greatest joy in life was being a mother and grandmother. She was the dedicated mother of Retired Lynn Police Chief Michael A. Mageary and his wife Lisa of Lynn, Kristine A. Stranahan and her husband Stephen of Lynn, and of the late Patrick W. Mageary and his wife Kathryn of Lynn. Arlene is also survived by her loving grandchildren Jennifer Back and her husband Jayson, Colin Mageary and his wife Gabby Bacha, Brendan Mageary, Kileigh Stranahan, and Cassidy Stranahan, and leaves many nieces and nephews.
Arlene’s visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn. Her funeral will be on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at 9:00 AM in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Pius V Church, 215 Maple Street, Lynn. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn. Donations in Arlene’s name can be made to Care Dimensions, Ste. B-102, 75 Sylvan Street, Danvers.
