Corporal Andy Jose Martinez, 21, of Lynn, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023. He was the son of Jose Martinez and Daisy Castillo. Born in Salem and raised in Lynn, Andy attended KIPP Academy where he was one of the top athletes on the Cross Country team, winning the MCSAO championship. Immediately after his graduation with the Class of 2021 he joined the United States Marine Corps.
At the time of his passing, Andy was stationed at MCBH Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Corporal Martinez loved the Marine Corps. After boot camp in Paris Island, SC, he attended his MOS (Military Occupation Specialty) training at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, FL, and MCAS New River, Jacksonville, FL. His responsibilities within the Avionics Work Center included performing the duties of an MV-22B Osprey Avionics Technician. He also supervised other Marines and trained them for qualifications.
In his time as a Marine, Corporal Martinez deployed to Darwin, Australia to train with our counterparts in the Australian Armed Forces. During his deployment, Corporal Martinez was chosen to participate in Talisban Sabre, which is the largest scale joint defense exercise between Australia and the United States. His efficiency within his specialty had a great impact on the Avionics Work Center’s success during the training exercise.
Corporal Martinez was described by his superiors as being an exceptional Marine. He constantly strove to be better and learn more. His presence with the Avionics Work Center boosted morale because he was always seen with a smile on his face and was ready to accomplish whatever he was tasked with. He would also have his fellow Marines laughing with his jokes and humor on a day-to-day basis. He was respectful to his leadership and always set a great example for his junior Marines. During his free time, Andy was taking online classes and pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the Southern New Hampshire University.
Andy will be remembered for his love of food, he had quite the appetite. He also loved all the four-legged family members; Louie, Jerry and Luke. Recently, he stared to get into new country music, and was a fan of Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, and Luke Bryan. He loved playing board games, such as Scrabble and Taboo. He enjoyed watching movies, especially John Wick, Top Gun and Maverick and was an avid gamer. Growing up, Andy always dreamed about becoming an Astronaut and loved everything about space.
He is survived by his loving siblings Jose Gabriel, Ismaris and Ambar, his brother-in-law Eamon, his beautiful niece, Grace, his adored grandmother, Luisa and several cousins, aunts and uncles.
Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2023 from 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn. His Funeral Service will follow at 6:00 pm. Burial will be private.
