Daniel D. Longhurst Jr., 80, of Swampscott, Massachusetts, passed away on October 15, 2026. Born in Michigan on October 7, 1946, to the late Daniel Sr. and Paula Longhurst, Dan was a proud graduate of the University of Michigan and a man who will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and quiet warmth.
Following his graduation, Dan relocated to Massachusetts, dedicating 43 years to a fulfilling career as an aerospace engineer with GE Aviation in Lynn. His time at GE was a cornerstone of his life, a place where he happily applied his engineering mind, formed lifelong friendships, and met his wife, Penny. After retiring, he valued his time spent staying connected to his former colleagues as a member of the GE OTA.
A coworker at GE introduced Dan to sailing, sparking a lifelong passion for the water. He soon bought his own sailboat and, in 1971, joined the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead. Over his 55-year membership, Dan was a steady and active presence, spending years racing O'Day Daysailers and serving on the Race Committee. His love for sailing extended beyond local harbors, carrying over to fond memories of vacations spent chartering boats in the Caribbean.
When he was not on the water, Dan could be found on the slopes. He was an avid skier who loved spending time with his family at his winter home at Sugarloaf and enjoyed several memorable ski trips out West with his many friends.
Above all else, Dan loved his family deeply and took immense pride in his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Penny; his son, James Longhurst, and his wife, Kathryn; his daughter, Diandra McCarthy, and her husband, Patrick; and his four grandchildren, Julianna, Evelyn, Kyla, and Connor. He also leaves behind his sisters, Karen Longhurst and Marilynn Rendall, and Marilynn’s husband, Gary, who reside in Michigan.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at the Kaplan Family Hospice House for their compassionate care during Dan's final days.
