She was a lifelong resident of Lynn, born to the late Siget “Ziggy” and Mary (Wizboski) Karuzis.
Dee grew up in West Lynn and was graduate of Lynn Classical High School, Class of 1966. She received her Associates Degree from Marian Court College in 1968. She worked as a secretary at the GE until 1973 when she married her high school sweetheart Martin T. Hines, and returned to Alaska with him where he was stationed in the Army. They returned home to Lynn in 1974, and Dee worked for the Lynn Public Schools as a secretary while Marty finished his degree. Once they started their family, Dee became a homemaker and caregiver not only for her husband and three children, but her parents as well. It was a title she was proud of, and she wore it well. Marty was again deployed during the Gulf War 1990-1991, leaving her to care for their children and their parents. Later in life, their home became known as “Happy Times Day Care” also described by Marty as happy chaos. She cared for her grandchildren and her furry grandkids as well.
Dee found joy in life’s simple pleasures—time with her beloved pets, catching up on her favorite soap operas, and indulging in cheesecake and other sweet treats. She treasured date nights with Marty, family dinners, and especially breakfasts shared with her grandchildren. Whether it was a shopping trip, a visit to the farm, or a breezy ride in the convertible with Missy (occasionally sacrificing a hat to the wind), Dee embraced every moment. She also loved trips to Salem Willows and Salisbury Beach, making lasting memories along the way. A wonderful cook, Dee had a special touch in the kitchen—somehow even a simple grilled cheese tasted better at her house, and no barbecue was ever complete without her famous potato salad.
Marty was the love of her life. They were unique, always together, they had what everyone hopes for but not everyone finds. They were not perfect, but they were perfectly matched. They shared 49 years of marriage prior to his passing in July 2022.
Dee leaves behind her son, Martin T. Hines II and his wife Melissa of Danvers, her daughters, Holly Ciarcia and her husband John of Beverly and Missy Morelli and her husband Stephen of Haverhill. Five grandchildren, Lily and Nora Hines, John and Julia Ciarcia and Kyle Morelli, and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Thomas and John “Jack” Karuzis. She also leaves behind her beloved cat, Georgie.
Family and friends are invited to Dee’s visitation on Monday, May 11 at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St. Lynn, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Her Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, May 12 at Sacred Heart Church, 571 Boston Street Lynn at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dee’s memory to her favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
