Born in Cambridge, MA, on September 20, 1933, he was the son of the late Edward T. and Florence (Leddy) Smithers Sr.. Buddy was the loving father of Ron Smithers of Lynn, Deb Brown and her husband, Kip of Lee, NH, Sue Beatty and her husband, John of Lynn, Karen Smithers of Braintree, and the late John and Tom Smithers; the cherished grandfather of Ron Smithers Jr. of Lynn, Erica Tanguay and her husband, Gregg of Pelham, NH, Tim Smithers of Chapel Hill, NC, Justin Brown of Lee, NH, Eric Brown and his fiancé, Katie of Peabody, Molly Narducci and her husband, Justin of Groveland, Keri Smithers and her husband, Johnny of El Paso, TX, Christine Smithers and her fiancé, Nick of Danvers, Michele Beatty of Marblehead; the great-grandfather of Jordan and Hailey Tanguay, Shane (Junior) Smithers and Grant (Little Tommy) Smithers; the dear brother of Mary Arrington and her husband, Steve of Andover and the late Marion Aspinwall and her husband, Wally; and the uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Buddy spent part of his childhood in Cambridge before moving to Lynn and graduated from the old Lynn Trade School. After school, he joined the Merchant Marines and traveled the world. In later years, he would entertain his family with many interesting stories about his journeys. He then joined the Army, met the love of his life, Dolores, got married and raised their family in Lynn. He worked as an accountant until his retirement due to health reasons. Buddy then devoted all his time to his family, which was his pride and joy. He was a proud veteran of the US Army and a dedicated member of the American Legion. He loved telling jokes, pulling pranks, gardening, cooking, watching campfires and was curious about anything happening around him. He had a larger than life, unique, fun-loving personality. Buddy cherished his time, and loved visits with family and friends.

From the moment that I met Mr. Smithers, I knew that we would be pals. He enjoyed telling a savory joke or two. He enjoyed making those around him laugh and smile. He always made me feel welcome, like one of the family. For that. I am quite thankful. We didn't have much time together, but I thoroughly enjoyed the time that we did share. Much love Mr. Smithers. Say hi to my dad for me.❤ You are all loved and missed.😢💙
