Helen Mary Powers

Helen Mary (Griskoski) Powers, a long-time resident of Lynn, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2017 in Union Hospital, Lynn at the age of 93. Born in Amesbury, MA on September 1, 1923, Helen was the daughter of the late Louis and Mary (Gulawata) Griskoski. Helen was raised in Amesbury and graduated from Amesbury High School with the Class of 1941. She went on to graduate from Burdette College where she studied business administration. She married her sweetheart, Joseph E. Powers of Lynn after Joseph bravely served in World War II. Helen worked as a medical secretary in Lynn Hospital for over 7 years before she retired to dedicate herself to homemaking. Helen and Joe were married for 44 years, raising and caring for their family, until Joe’s passing in March of 1994. Helen was skilled at homemaking and enjoyed sewing and knitting for family and friends. She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed mystery stories and historical biographies. She may best be remembered by her family for her baking and cooking talents, especially comfort foods around the dinner table. Helen was truly the center of the home, and her love and caring will be deeply missed by her family.

Helen leaves her children: Charles J. Powers and his wife, Beth of MD, Marcia L. Lindquist of Danvers, Mary H. Powers of Lynn, Steven M. Powers and his wife, May of WA, and David R. Powers of Lynn; her grandchildren: Jennifer Lindquist and her husband, Joshua Wright of CO, and Kristin Lindquist-Cronin and her husband, Thomas of Danvers. Helen is also survived by her sister-in-law, Katherine Powers of Ashland as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Stephen Griskoski.

Funeral from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 8am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Pius V Church, 215 Maple St. Lynn at 9am. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Lynn. Visiting Hours will be held in the funeral home on Friday, January 20, 2017 from 4 to 8pm.
