Helen B. Smith

A 1941 graduate of Revere High School, she was the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Carmella D’Ortona. Helen celebrated her 90th birthday last week, in her dining room at her home of 58 years, surrounded by family and Italian food.

Helen worked outside the home as a waitress at the Continental Restaurant in Saugus for over 40 years she built a large following of loyal lunchtime customers.

A dedicated cook and gardener, she loved hosting Sunday family dinners, birthdays, and holidays. As a member with her husband of the 83rd Infantry Division Association (WWII), Helen enjoyed traveling all over the country attending annual reunions. She was also a lifetime member of the Lynn Democratic City Committee (Ward 7), and campaigned enthusiastically over the years for her son, daughter, and grandson.

In addition to her loving husband she is survived by her three children, Ernest M. Smith, Jr. of Boston; James E. Smith and his wife Abbe Young Smith of Swampscott; and Deborah Smith Walsh and her husband John Coleman Walsh of Lynn; and was predeceased by her son Steven B. Smith. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Marissa Walsh and her partner Matt Walker of New Haven, Connecticut; Steven Walsh and his wife Annie of Lynn; Joseph Walsh of London, England; Andrew Smith of Brooklyn, New York; Hayley Smith of Boston; Tristan Smith of Swampscott; and Chloe Smith of Swampscott; and four great-grandchildren, Coleman, Maeve, Myles, and Brigid Walsh, all of Lynn. She was preceded in death by her sister, Angie, and her brothers Nicholas and William.

Helen’s Funeral will be from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Wednesday at 10:30 AM. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, Boston St. West Lynn at 11:30 AM. Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 4-8 PM.
