

Retired Lynn Firefighter John T. Welch, 90, of Lynn died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday evening. He was the beloved husband to Joan (St. Hilaire) Welch with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.
John was born in Lynn, son of the late Michael and Margaret (McDermott) Welch. He was a lifelong resident of the city and was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School Class of 1938.
John was appointed a Lynn Firefighter on May 19, 1951. In December of 1961 he was appointed the Chiefs Aide. He participated in combating the conflagration on November 28, 1981. He was also commended in General Order #52 on November 30, 1981. John retired March 13, 1985 after serving the City of Lynn for 34 years.
He was a member of the Lynn Firefighters Relief Association and the Lynn Retirees Association. He was a long time communicant of Our Lady of Assumption Church. John also enjoyed woodworking, the Boston Red Sox, listening to Andrea Bocelli and Pavarotti and his Phillies Cigars. He had a love for animals especially his golden retrievers Sam and Teddy.
He was a WW II Navy veteran where he served on the USS Pocono.
In addition to his wife, he was a devoted father to Jack Welch of Lynn and Nancy (Welch) Harris and her husband Patrick of Woburn. He was also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Leo Welch.
John’s Funeral will be from the CUFFE-McGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Monday at 9:00 AM. Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Assumption Church, Lynnfield at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Sunday from 3-7 PM. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
