

Mrs. Kathryn M. (Carey) “Kay” Doherty, 82, died Friday January 2, 2015 in the Merrimack Valley Hospice House after a brief illness. She was the loving wife of Joseph P. Doherty, with whom she shared 62 years of marriage.
Kay was born in Burlington, daughter of the late Thomas and Ruth (Glasgow) Carey. She was a graduate of Burlington High School Class of 1950. Kay was a resident of Lynn for most of her life and has resided in Plaistow, NH for the past year.
She worked as a Switchboard Operator for Lynn Hospital and later for Union Hospital until her retirement. She previously was a Home health aide.
Kay’s true devotion was spending time with her family. She always thought of others before herself. Kay enjoyed cooking especially for her family over the different holidays. She was an empathetic woman and lived for her kids and grandkids. Kay was a baseball trivia buff and her favorite baseball trivia question was “What are the seven different ways a batter can reach first base?” In addition to her husband Kay is survived by her three sons David S. Doherty and his wife Nancy of Plaistow, NH, Paul R. Doherty and his wife Nancy of Lynn and Joseph P. Doherty and his wife Judy of Peabody, her three daughters Lorraine R. Wilcox and her husband Don of Upton and Joanne M. Power and her husband Mark of Reading and the late Nancy A. Doherty; two sisters Ruth Gillis of Tyngsboro and Frances Pierce of Holiday, FL. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Thomas, Lawrence, Carl, George, Robert and Edward Carey and Helen Simmons.
Kay’s Funeral Services will be in the CUFFE-McGINN FUNERAL HOME 157 Maple St. Lynn on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 3-7 PM. Gifts in her memory may be made to Mass General Hospital Cancer Care, Lunder Building 55 Fruit St. Boston, MA 02114 or the Merrimack Valley Hospice House 360 North Ave Haverhill, MA 01830. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
