Peggy was the beloved wife of the late Joseph E. DeTour with whom she shared 59 years of marriage, next month would have been their 60th wedding anniversary. She also leaves her daughters, Doreen Bucklin and her husband Andrew and Kimberly Wilkins and her husband Chad.
Peggy was born in Everett, Mass to the late James and Margaret (Ryan) Cunningham and lived there until moving to Lynn, she was a graduate of Lynn Classical, Class of 1960. Throughout her life Peggy worked for various companies including Essex Bank in Lynn, the Lynn Credit Bureau, New Medico and Urology Consultants where she worked for 22 years until her retirement in 2022.
Peggy and her husband Joe raised their two daughters in Lynn and lived on Tucker Street for over 30 years, and she considered all of her friends on Tucker Street her “family”. She loved helping planning cookouts, pool parties, card nights and the highlight of every summer was the annual 4th of July block parties, especially the annual “talent show”.
Peggy’s grandchildren were what she truly lived for and were her heart and her pride and joy. Her fierce love for them was beyond compare, she cherished and loved each one of them with every fiber of her being. Bryan, Emily, James, Brett and Amanda made her world go round and they were all so special to her. Whether she was ironing a school uniform, driving them around to do their paper route, washing baseball pants until they were so white they looked brand new, making them their favorite dish of elbow macaroni and peas and countless other gestures of love she would do it for them and always with a smile on her face.
Peggy and her husband Joe owned a vacation home in Meredith, NH where the family would gather during the summer months, she enjoyed taking her grandchildren to Fun Spot, the beach, mini golf and their famous trips to McDonald’s where the story of her getting a brain freeze after drinking a frappe will go down in history.
Peggy was blessed with two extraordinary friendships that spanned more than four decades. Along with her beloved best friend Terri, and her dear friend Denise, the three shared an inseparable bond filled with love, laughter and countless cherished memories. Denise predeceased Peggy, but the friendship they shared remained a treasured part of Peggy’s life.
Peggy leaves behind her devoted grandchildren Bryan Wilkins, Emily Bucklin, James Wilkins, Brett Bucklin and Amanda Wilkins. She also leaves behind her dear brother Warren Cunningham and his wife Joyce, and her brother Paul Cunningham. She was predeceased by her sisters Patricia Bower and Joan Frier and her brothers James Cunningham and Leo Cunningham. She was also predeceased by her brother-in-law Raymond Bower and her precious niece Katie who passed away last year at the age of 43. She also leaves behind her nieces, nephews, several cousins and her two “grand-dogs” Ivey and Violet, whom she loved very much! Peggy treasured the special relationship she shared with her niece Ellen, whose love, companionship and steadfast support were a blessing throughout her life and brought her peace, especially during her final days.
Peggy is now at peace and is reunited with her loving husband Joe, her devoted niece Katie, her beloved sisters Patti and Joni and her mother, all of whom she missed so very much.
The loss of Peggy carries a profound sadness and will leave an immeasurable hole in the hearts of her daughters, her son-in-laws and her grandchildren for many years to come. She was truly a selfless, caring, kind and devoted mother, mother-in-law and grandmother.
