Mary E. Valeri, age 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at The Branches of North Attleboro.

She was the beloved wife of the late John E. Valeri, Sr., with whom she had shared 44 years of marriage.

Born in Lynn, MA on June 6, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Charles L. Kirby, Sr. and Julia E. (Casey) Kirby. Mary graduated from St. Mary’s High School with the class of 1947. She then went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Salem State College, graduating in 1951. Following her education, Mary taught in the Lynn School System, and retired after 34 years of teaching. During her time as a teacher, she was also a member of the Lynn Teachers Union.

Mary had lived in Nahant since 1960, and was a proud volunteer for the Nahant Historical Society. She was also a communicant of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, a Catholic Charities volunteer, and a former Infant of Prague. Mary spent her time in Nahant, not only volunteering, but also spending time with her beloved Highland Road neighbors. Above all else though, Mary loved her family, and she cherished the memories she got to make with them.

Surviving Mary are her children, John E. Valeri, Jr. and his wife Marguerite of N. Attleboro, and Julia M. El Assaad and her husband Abdallah of Coronado, CA; her four grandchildren, Brandon, Aidan, Jacqueline, and Gabriella; her cousin, with whom she shared many fond memories from her childhood, Margaret Havey, of Everett; her sister-in-law, Carol Valeri of York Beach, ME, as well as many other beloved Kirby and Valeri nieces and nephews.

Mary was the beloved sister of the late Charles L. Kirby, Jr. and his wife Jane, Richard M. Kirby and his wife Dorothy, and Paul A. Kirby and his wife Alice.

Jack & Julia,

I always loved getting a call from your mom. Few people have such warmth and love in their voices when they greet others. That warmth extended to everything Mary did.

I will miss Mary in this world, and I will remember her forever.

Dear Jack & Julia,
I absolutely loved being one of your mother's friends. Our friendship began when she was caring for both of you babies at home, continued when we became teaching colleagues, and became stronger through the years.
She was so kind, so "with it", and so funny. I'd laugh every time she would use your Dad's full name. "I'll find out what Jack Valeri thinks."
Jack, I'm so glad you gave her that last ride through her beloved Town of Nahant. She loved you and your family, Julia and her family, and your Dad so much, but she had another love that I'm sure you know about, and that was Nahant and its people. She
will be missed by so many.

Mrs. Valeri was my teacher at the Washington Community School in the early 1960's. She was a rare person who took a great interest in her students. She was a shining light in my life when I really needed one.
I really appreciated her and never properly thanked her.
Rest in Peace Mrs. Valeri.

Ever since I was a newcomer to Nahant in 2008, I have volunteered with the Nahant Historical Society. My first and on-going assignment was to work with Mary who was researching and documenting the history of administrators, faculty, and staff of the Nahant public schools. My job has been to study her beautifully hand-written tables of the names and dates of service of each individual who was an employees of a Nahant public school and enter that information into the Nahant Historical Society’s data bank. It has been an honor to work with her - I have learned so much about the history of education in Nahant, and personally, she was one of the most delightful people I have ever met - sharp as a tack and FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY!!! I will miss her wry sense of humor, and that beautiful twinkle in her eye. God bless you, Mary.
