LYNN – Mrs. Mary (DeFilippo) Vitali passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by flowers and with her husband by her side after a long battle with illness. She was 79 years old. Mary was born in Lynn, on September 16th, 1942 in the same maternity ward as her future husband, Samuel A. Vitali. She was the youngest of three girls of the late Rocco DeFilippo and the late Catherine (Nicholopoulos) DeFilippo and step daughter of the late Rose (Maione) DeFilippo. She was raised in the Brickyards of Lynn on Blossom Street, neighbor to many cousins and family members. She graduated from Lynn Classical High School in 1960 and attended and graduated from Salem State College with a Bachelor’s Degree and a Certificate in Education. Mrs. Vitali taught for 37 years in the Lynn Public Schools, teaching second grade and then ESL classes to the many varied immigrant populations of Lynn. She was an avid gardener with an encyclopedic knowledge of the flora and fauna in her backyard bordering Lynn Woods. Mary enjoyed painting and spending time with her family, and she was the life of the party at nearly every function she attended. Treasured wife, loving mother, and beloved Nona to her five grandchildren whom she adored, Mary leaves behind her husband, Attorney Samuel A. Vitali; her son, the Hon. Michael A. Vitali and his wife, Dr. Sally Huntoon Vitali and their two daughters, Lucia and Sofia; her daughter, Sheri Vitali Warrington, and her husband, Daniel Warrington and their three children, Marianna (Mia), Rocco, and Matteo; her daughter, Catherine (Cassie) Vitali Sullivan and her husband, Mark Sullivan. She will be missed by her sister Catherine DeFilippo Giangregorio and her husband Silvio Giangregorio and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister, Lucille DeFilippo Kiklis and her husband, Angelo Kiklis. ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St., Lynn, Saturday, August 13th at 9:30 A.M. followed by her funeral Mass at St. Pius V Church, Maple St., Lynn at 10 A.M. Relatives and friends invited. Burial will be private. Visiting hours at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St., Lynn, Friday, Aug. 12th from 3 to 7 P.M.See more See Less
