Neal G. Onos

Passed away on March 16, 2020

Neal G. Onos, 79, a longtime resident of Peabody, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 16, 2020. Born in South Gate, CA to the late Cornelius and Jacoba (Hagoort) Onos, Neal was the cherished husband of Mildred “Millie” (Moriarty) Onos for 58 years. He was the most devoted husband and father and enjoyed every moment spent with his family.

Neal was raised in Lynn and graduated from Lynn English High School with the class of 1958. He settled in Peabody and worked for Citrus Fruit Juice Co. and then for Pepperidge Farm as a bread distributor for many years before his retirement. He enjoyed golfing and skiing and was a proud member of the Lynn Snow Chasers ski club. Most of all he was a family man. He coached basketball, softball and little league for his children and their friends. He enjoyed camping trips to his favorite spot on the Saco River in NH and across the country. He was a masterful joke-teller and honest to a fault.

He will be greatly missed by his wife Millie, his children Julie Spang and her husband Dave, Kristen Eriksen and her husband Paul, Jodi O’Neill and her husband Chris, Marcy Mason and her husband Tom, Erin Buckley and her husband Eric, and Neal Onos and his wife Colleen. He also leaves behind his brother Jerry Onos and his late wife Diane and his sister and brother-in-law Fran and Bill Martel and his cherished grandchildren Shannon Spang, Charlotte, Ben, Austin and Cody Eriksen, Brendan, Tim and Colin O’Neill, Kate and Sam Mason, Ryan, Sarah, Luke and the late Jenna Buckley, and Jaydn and Landon Onos. His many nieces and nephews also survive him, as well as many cherished friends.

Neal’s family would like to thank the staff from his hospital and rehab visits and especially the VNA hospice staff that helped him through his last weeks so he could rest in his favorite place-his home.

Due to recent events, funeral services and interment were held privately. The family is looking forward to celebrating in grand "Onos" style with a memorial Mass and Celebration of Life soon. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Judes Children’s Hospital or My Brother’s Table, 98 Willow Street, Lynn, MA 01901 are appreciated.

Dear Millie and Family,
I remember Neal's broad smile and the twinkle in his eyes when he told a joke. I was saddened to learn of his passing! He was a great guy devoted to his family! I remember the fun we had at St Ann's events, dances and how much we laughed! I extend my sincere condolences to you all. 58 years of marriage is quite an accomplishment which is a testimony to how the 2 of you negotiated and compromised keeping your children in focus! Rest in peace, Neal, for a life well lived! I will keep you all in my prayers at this challenging time!

To: Millie & her children & grandchildren:

Sincerest Sympathy to the "best in the west" Class Lady of the LEHS Class of 1958. There are no words that can comfort you as you bid goodbye to your life's companion, i.e., the classiest gentleman of the Class of 1958. You were truly my "favorite couple" and now one half of you has gone to God. We can take comfort in the fact the Neal knows no more pain and will never again suffer or hurt; he has, I believe, a special place awaiting him in heaven in a joyous reward for the "kind of person he was." God will reward him for all of those years that Neal cared for and honored his wonderful wife, Millie, & their children as well as their grandchildren. May Neal rest in peace and may Millie take comfort in the fact that those of us who love her dearly as a friend will be there to strengthen her against the pain of the days to come when Millie must adjust to the days of living without her wonderful lifetime partner. We shall all miss him...but, we will all be there to comfort Millie.

Love from Joanne (Morretti) Bonura, LEHS Class of 1958

Millie... a forever friend,
So sorry for the loss of Neal... class of "58" will always hold Neal in our hearts....
Mill I will always remember Neal when he and I were side by side at rehab in Peabody... we were talking about 1958 and the nurse (age 21) asked what is 58, we told her that is when we graduated..... she thought that was the funniest... how could we still even know each other!!!
We had a good laugh Mill, Neal was a great guy and had a wonderful wife and family.
God bless Mill and hold the memories in your heart. Love, Ellie and Denny
