Described by his son, Paul K. Halloran Jr., as “the most resilient person I’ve ever met,” Paul overcame a variety of medical issues over the last 20 years before complications from a cardiac issue led to his death.
Paul lived in Lynn for the first 16 and last 20 years of his life. In between, he was a resident of Woburn, where his family moved in 1954 after his sophomore year at St. Mary’s. It was in Woburn that he met Jean Ann Bactullo and the two were married on June 23, 1962. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2012, 18 months before Jean died suddenly.
Paul graduated from Woburn High School in 1956 and joined the U.S. Army in 1960. He served in Greenland and was honorably discharged in 1962.
Paul worked at Polaroid Corporation in Waltham for 30 years. From 1981 to 1985, he and his wife both worked second jobs to send their son to the College of the Holy Cross. After he retired from Polaroid, he worked as a bagger at Market Basket, first in Woburn, then in Danvers after he and his wife moved to Lynn to be closer to their son, daughter-in-law, Julie, and two granddaughters, Kathryn and Martha. The job was perfect for him, as no one enjoyed meeting and talking to people more than Paul.
Paul attended the day program at Pondview (formerly Briarcliff) Lodge, where he enjoyed the company of friends and royal treatment from the staff. In an oral history done on Pondview members, Paul said he was proud of the “spirit of volunteerism that has been part of my life.” In Woburn he served as president of the Parents’ Club at St. Charles School when his son was a student, and he proudly recalled that he helped raise more money than any of his predecessors. Paul also volunteered at the Information desk at Lynn City Hall.
A devout Catholic who watched the daily TV Mass, Paul lived out the Commandments. He loved God above all, loved his neighbor, honored his parents, and was honest and compassionate. One of his proudest days in his later years was May 15, 2015, when he was there for Kathryn’s graduation from Villanova University, home of the 2016 NCAA basketball national champions.
Paul was the son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Ryan) Halloran. In addition to his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren, he leaves: three brothers, Peter, his twin, of Chelsea, Thomas of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Philip of Malden; two sisters, Patricia Brown of Wilmington and Marylou Danehy of Englewood, Fla.; and his dear and loyal friends, Paul and Charlene McCarthy of Dracut. He was also the grandfather of the late John Paul Halloran.
Paul’s funeral will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9 from the CUFFE-MCGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple St. Lynn, at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Lynnfield, at 10 a.m. Burial will be private. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Paul’s memory may be made to Nashoba Learning Group, 10 Oak Park Drive, Bedford, MA 01730 or Our Lady of the Assumption Memorial Fund, 17 Grove St., Lynnfield, MA 01940.
