Shirley (Smith) Whittier, age 84, of Beverly and former longtime resident of Lynn, passed away peacefully at Beverly Hospital on Wednesday, March 21, 2018. She was born in Lynn on October 27, 1933, the daughter of the late, Mortimer J. and Alice M. (O’Connell) Smith. Shirley had attended Lynn Classical High School for a time and graduated from Wakefield High School, Class of 1952. She had worked for Christ Child Nursery as an aide and bus driver for many years. Shirley also worked as a secretary for Dr. Yukins Ophthalmologist office for 22 years prior to her retirement. She was a communicant of St. Pius V Church where she was very active. She had served as a Eucharistic Minister, the former Prefect of the Ladies Sodality, the bakery table at Bazars, etc. She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, especially winning at cards. Shirley was an active member of the 3rd Thursday Club and a very proud 35 year season ticket holder for the New England Patriots. Shirley was also a very talented sewer and quilt maker. Above all else, she enjoyed spending time with her family and absolutely loved being “Brammy” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Shirley is survived by her husband and best friend of 64 years, Raymond J. Whittier of Beverly, her seven children; Christine Morganelli and spouse, Michael of Lynn, Raymond Whittier Jr. and spouse, Susan of Stratham, NH, Daniel Whittier and spouse, Mary Ellen of Stratham, NH, Mark Whittier and spouse, Maria of Beverly, Denise Benevento and spouse, Vincent of Stratham, NH, Mary Jean Raimo and spouse, Mike of Beverly and Paula Funk and spouse, Norm of Ashford, CT. Twenty grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews also survive her. She was pre-deceased by her daughter, Sheryle A. Whittier, her sister, Jean Oravetz and her brother, Robert M. Smith.
Family and friends are invited to attend Mrs. Whittier’s visitation on Sunday, March 25, 2018, from 1-5 PM at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn, MA 01904. Her funeral will begin on Monday, March 26, 2018 at 9 AM at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 AM at St. Pius V Church, 215 Maple Street, Lynn, MA 01904. Burial will follow the Mass in St. Joseph Cemetery on Broadway in Lynn. Donations are requested to: St. Vincent De Paul Society at St. Pius V Church.
