Born on July 30, 1942, Tom is survived by his loving wife Nancy (Shea) with whom he would have shared his 59th anniversary next week; his son Thomas and his wife Jennifer (Joyce) of Shrewsbury, MA and his granddaughter Michaela who he adorningly called the “love of his life.” Tom was predeceased by his son Michael who was killed in a 1988 automobile accident.
The fifth of seven children raised by Killian J. and Anna Francis (Casey) Brady in Lynn, MA, Tom is survived by his sister Anne Ward of Lynn, MA; his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Alicia Brady of Arizona; and his brother and sister-in-law, John and Kathy of Florida. He leaves behind his sisters-in-law Madeline Brady of Lynn, MA and Frances Brady of Reading, MA; as well as his brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Carol Silvernail (Shea) of Florida. He was blessed with nearly two dozen nieces and nephews, many of whose names and dates of birth he recited in order when asked about his family, as well as their innumerable children and grandchildren. He is reunited with his parents and brothers Patrick, Killian and Edward who rest in peace.
Tom grew up in Lynn, graduating from St. Mary’s High School in 1960. The first of his family to attend college, he graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and then obtained his Masters in the same field. Through the Co-op program, he began his career at United Shoe in Beverly, MA where he met Nancy, fell in love and began their family. Tom spent five decades as a Design Engineer and Project Manager with General Electric’s Aircraft Engine Group in Lynn, most notably as one of the key engineering architects in the design of the J85, F404 and F414 engines which powered the United States Navy F-18 jets.
A strong believer in education, Tom taught for several years at Lynn Vocational and Technical High School in the 1970’s and then, while still at GE, taught Statistics and Analytics at Salem State College. Always the teacher, he never refused a request for help, assisting his sons in all their studies while tutoring Mike and Tommy’s friends throughout high school and college, as well as most, if not all, of his nieces and nephews. Rarely was there a night that “Mr. Brady” or Uncle Tom did not get a call or have someone stop by with a question. He was always ready, willing and able to help; it was his true passion.
In 1969, Tom and Nancy moved to Peabody where they raised their two sons. True to his Irish Catholic upbringing, he and Nancy religiously attended weekly services at St. Ann’s parish. For years he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.
Tom loved sports and avidly followed all of the Boston teams. He regularly enjoyed completing baseball grids with his knowledge of sports legends from the 1950s, recalling their names and individual stats. While he played football and baseball growing up, he truly excelled at coaching. He proudly coached his boys in hockey, soccer, basketball and baseball from the time they were six through each of their high school graduations. Over this period, Tom positively influenced the lives of hundreds of local Peabody youths who loved and respected him immeasurably.
While work and these avocations filled his days, his heart and mind were dedicated to his family. He placed Nancy, Michael, Tommy, Jennifer and Michaela before all else and considered all of his relations of similar importance. A true family man, Tom will be missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched
