LYNN – Mr. Walter Joseph O’Connor, 100, of Lynn, passed away, Sunday, June 23rd, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers. He was the beloved husband of the late A. Louise (Sheehan) O’Connor with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage and of the late Ann (Naravas) O’Connor with whom he shared over 7 years of marriage.
Born in Marlborough and raised in Lynn, he was the son of the late Daniel F. and Helen (Blagdon) O’Connor. He graduated from Lynn Classical High School with the class of 1938. He was an athlete and played football, basketball and baseball in high school and was a notable competitive swimmer. He was invited to swim in the Olympic Trials of what would have been the 1940 Olympics. He served as a sergeant in the US Army during WWII in North Africa and France, where he trained French artillery troops. Walter worked as a machinist at GE in Lynn for over 41 years before his retirement. After his retirement he took up tennis and golf, playing up until a couple of years ago at Gannon’s and other local clubs. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Lynnfield and greatly enjoyed ballroom dancing where he and his wife, Louise would often win if there was a competition.
Walter was the loving father of Maureen Henderson of Rockport, Timothy O’Connor and his wife, Denise of Danvers, Mary Scally and her husband, Patrick, and John O’Connor and his late wife Carol, all of Bradford; the cherished grandfather of Steven Henderson, Erin Good, Katie Tedesco, Shannon Shea, Heather Crane, Ryan Scally and Colby O’Connor; the great-grandfather of Sean, Megan, Robert and Curtis Welcome, Isabel March, Kylie, Gemma, and Maeve Shea, Hadley, Charlotte, and Francesca Tedesco and Amelia Crane and the great-great grandfather of Everlee Welcome; dear brother of the late Daniel F. O’Connor, Jr., Eleanor Masters, Doris Reaney and Helen Farnan; and the uncle of several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Thursday, June 27th, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. His funeral will be held from the funeral home on Friday, June 28th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Lynnfield. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Lynn.
