

William was born in Lynn, son of the late Alfred and Evelyn (Ryans) Best. He was a lifelong resident of the city. Bill graduated from Lynn English High School Class of 1952.
He served with the United States Army reserve and held the rank of Private Second Class.
William worked for the Lynn Police Department. He began his career as a Reserve Officer in 1962. In 1965 he was appointed a regular Police Officer and retired in 1996 after serving the City of Lynn for 34 years. He also received 2 commendations and was awarded the Medal Honor for Policeman of the year in 1978. He was also the first breathalyzer expert for the Department. He was a member of the Lynn Police Relief association and was a member and Past Vice President of the Lynn Police Union. He also was a member of the Mass Police Association.
He loved to play the Banjo and was a member of the 9:29er’s for over 30 years and took over as Musical Director for the past 10 years. He was also lead player for a musical group the Treble Makers.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his two daughters Linda J. Corea and her husband Larry of Lynn and Dianne M. Romano and her husband Phil of West Newbury. He was the loving grandfather to Samantha, Sabrina and Jessica Romano. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Donald and Eugene Best.
William’s Funeral Service will be Saturday at 10 AM in Bethany Congregational Church, 410 Eastern Ave Lynn. Visiting hours will be Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St. Lynn. Private Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family has asked to please make donations to the All Care VNA and Hospice 210 Market St. Lynn, MA 01901.
