William Haydon Shurtleff passed away peacefully at his home in Nahant on Saturday morning, July 11, 2026. He was born on March 17, 1955, in New Bedford and grew up in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. He later moved to Lynn, where he raised his family and proudly served as a woodworking teacher in the Lynn Public Schools for 30 years. During his career, he taught at Classical High School, Eastern Junior High, Pickering and Breed Middle Schools.
Bill was the son of the late Raymond and Janice Shurtleff and the brother of Sandra Stapleton and Robert Shurtleff. He was the beloved husband of Pam Shurtleff (Gallagher), father of Eric and Kyle Shurtleff, and proud grandfather of Audrey Shurtleff. He also leaves behind many cherished in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Bill's happy place was his vacation home in Denmark, Maine. He loved spending time there making improvements to his property, befriending his neighbors, and listening to classic rock. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and enjoyed riding for more than 50 years, especially along the back roads of Maine during the summer. He loved talking about his time in the Boy Scouts, woodworking, auto mechanics, and his childhood on West Island in Fairhaven. Many of his former Lynn students still have the wooden stools, lamps, and mousetrap race cars they made in their homes, which were projects that Bill was always proud of.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
