Denny was born on March 28, 1931 to Harry and Leona Campbell in Port Townsend. He spent his childhood growing up in both Port Townsend and Port Ludlow (when it was still a lumber town). The waters of Puget Sound were his oyster; he was always spending as much time as possible throughout his life on the beaches and on the water.
After high school, Denny attended Washington State College (WSU) in Pullman. He soon realized that he was not ready for college, and decided to enlist in the Navy to “sail the world”. However, the only time that he was on a ship was between San Francisco and Oakland. After he was discharged from the Navy, he enrolled at Eastern Washington College of Education (EWSU) where he earned a degree in Education. There, he met his future wife, Joella Northrup. Denny and Joella were married on August 24, 1957.
After graduating from college, Denny and Joella, along with daughter Julie, relocated to Edmonds where Denny began a long career teaching Biology along with other classes. First at Edmonds Junior High, then Mountlake Terrace and Woodway High Schools. He retired from teaching in 1993. While teaching, Denny had the opportunity to travel to both Africa and the Galapagos Islands, giving him lifelong memories! After Denny retired, he began a short career at Immunex in Seattle working in their laboratories.
Denny was always passionate about sailing and he worked hard to realize his dream when in 1967 he bought a Tahiti Ketch sailboat named “Koloa”. Denny, Joella and Julie sailed the sailboat around Puget Sound and up into the waters between Vancouver Island and British Columbia. Soon another crew member, Jack, was also added to the crew.
Denny enjoyed lots of other activities as well. He enjoyed being around family members and was always willing to try new things. He was a kid at heart and really enjoyed sharing things with his grandchildren Tim, Devon and Penny Jo.
Denny is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Joella, daughter Julie Meanor (Michael), son Jack Campbell (Wynne), along with his three grandchildren, Tim Meanor, Devon Campbell and Penny Jo Campbell, nephew Jeff Sullivan and niece Joyce Noren. Denny is preceded in death by both of his parents, Harry and Leona Campbell, and his only sibling, Sally Sullivan.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 24 at 2:00pm at the Edmonds Unitarian Church at 8104 224th St SW Edmonds. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Denny be made to your favorite charity. Vote for the Experienced Woman!
