I was deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Edson, my colleague at Philips. We had recently spoken after completing the STP ride, and I had no idea that he was a cyclist as well. It was a meaningful connection to discover, and sadly, that conversation was the last time I saw him.

My heart goes out to his family and friends, especially his wife and children, during this incredibly difficult time. Edson will be deeply missed.

I am grateful that I had the privilege of working with Edson. I am even more grateful that he became a friend, something I never expected to find at work. Edson was thoughtful, empathetic, considerate, and helpful. At the same time, he had boundaries, stood up fiercely for what he believed in, and was always looking out for the underdog—anyone needing help, support, or protection. His big brother identity was consistent throughout his life.

If you were lucky enough to be liked by Edson, he had a way of bringing you in. He was the anchor and glue of our Philips family: caring for people, connecting us to one another, and creating a sense of community. He didn’t need to be the center of attention or the biggest person in the room, but his calm presence made you feel seen and heard by the way he listened, supported, and encouraged.

Edson’s life was far too short, but I think he knew to make the most of the time he had. He was always trying new things, seeing new places, pursuing the activities he enjoyed, and, most importantly, showing up for the people he loved. He cared deeply and lived fully. In this world, he was a caretaker, and I hope that wherever he is now, he is the one being cared for.

I know Edson would have traded anything to see Ethan and Emma grow up and grow old with Quyen. And while we may not see him, I have no doubt he’ll still be there when you need him: the wise voice in your head offering advice or confidence, the wind quietly changing your course, or the shelter that appears just when the rain begins.

He’ll be with us in the lessons he taught, the people he connected, the activities he inspired, and the lives he touched. He has imprinted us all with the love he gave freely. 

I’ll always hear Edson’s voice when I’m trying to find the motivation to exercise, when contemplating a big purchase, when debating the extra effort to recycle or compost, or when hesitating to try something new. He will never be forgotten.

More than anything, Edson was a wonderful friend. He was someone you could count on, someone who listened without judgment, and someone whose kindness was genuine and constant. His patience, compassion, and quiet generosity touched so many lives, including ours. We feel incredibly fortunate to have known him and to have called him our friend.

Edson’s presence will be deeply missed, but the kindness he showed, the friendships he built, and the memories he gave us will remain. Our hearts are with his family and everyone who loved him during this incredibly difficult time.  We are here if you need anything.

I knew Edson around 5th or 6th grade. Our parents were friends, so of course we were too as kids. Our dads forced us to go fishing, crabbing, smelting, etc… in frigid weather, early mornings, to distant places. It was a relief having a mutual friend to commiserate with on these exhausting adventures. We played basketball, video games, and shared a common childhood. I’ll always remember him. /// A special message to Edson’s children Emma & Ethan. Know that your dad had many friends who were lifelong connections. I also lost a parent when I was a child. One thing that kept me fulfilled was friendships and accepting extra love from family and relatives. Keep good friendships as you grow older. Remember your Dad’s love lives on through your relatives & his friends. You can still learn from your dad even though he is gone from your memories and others experiences even as you become adults. It's hard to find words for how much Edson's passing has shaken me. He wasn't just a colleague — he was a true friend, and one of the people I most looked forward to seeing, both at work and outside of it.

This photo is from one of our many rides around the Lake Washington loop. Edson is actually the reason I picked up biking in the first place — his enthusiasm was contagious, and he had a way of making even a tough climb feel like part of the fun. Some of my favorite memories with him happened on two wheels: the conversations, the terrible jokes, the shared exhaustion at the end of a long ride.

He brought that same warmth and energy into everything — our work together, and the friendship that grew out of it. This is a huge loss, not just for his family, but for so many of us who were lucky enough to call him a friend and colleague. My heart goes out to his wife and children, and to everyone who loved him. He will be deeply missed.
