Eduardo Jorge Firpo (or more lovingly known as “Edu” by his wife and “Abu” by his grandchildren) unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack on the 27th of December 2018.

Eduardo was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina and after becoming an adult, he attended college at the University of Buenos Aires, where he received a PhD in Biology.

This is also where he met his wife, Patricia, who was also a college student at the time, studying to get her doctorate in biology as well.

After courting for a few years, the two were married in 1975, and soon, they were blessed with 3 children: Their son Juan and their twin daughters, Maria Florencia (AKA Flo) and Maria Paula.

In early years Eduardo and Patricia worked at a Research Institution in Buenos Aires. In 1986 the whole family moved to the United States due that Patricia received an international fellowship in research and they settled in Philadelphia. During those years Eduardo was an associate scientist at the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology in Philadelphia.

In 1990 the family moved to the West Coast – which is how they ended up moving to Mill Creek area in 1991. Eduardo started to work in cancer research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) of Seattle. During those years he was awarded a Research Fellowship grant by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. He focused his work in breast cancer research, and continue his career at FHCRC until he retired in 2014.

After retirement, he relaxed for a little while, he started teaching Spanish at the Senior Center in Mill Creek. He also volunteered at the Museum of Future Flight, the Evergreen Hospital, as a tutor at the King County Library, and twice a week in his daughter’s classroom at Woodin Elementary.

Most recently, Eduardo was a substitute para educator for the North Shore school district for kindergarten up to 5th grade and special ed – and he absolutely adored working with the students.

Eduardo was an intelligent man, and an avid learner – he never stopped learning. If you asked him a question, he’d have 6 books ready to back up his answer.

Eduardo was very approachable and everyone seemed to adore him. He would talk to every single person at her school and knew the history of most of their staff. Eduardo was the type of person who could make friends with anyone and he genuinely cared about everyone.

Eduardo was an avid chess player and stamp collector. He loved orchids and all kinds of plants – he was able to grow anything. Most often, you could find him with his grandkids – and he treasured any time he was able to spend with them.

He is preceded in death by his parents Jorge & Yolanda and his daughter Maria Paula, who passed away in 2014. He is survived by his wife Patricia, sister Mabel, children Juan & Maria (Flo) and his grandchildren, Emma, Alex, Bruce & Dean.

A funeral service will be held at Floral Hills Funeral Home at 11am on December 31st, 2018.

MABEL

It is with great sadness that I write these words to celebrate the life of my friend Edu. It is impossible to understand why devastating things like this happen to such good people.

Edu, Pat and I have been friends since graduate school, which was over forty years ago, and we remained good friends to the day. We helped each other get through difficult years and challenging circumstances, forging indelible, warm memories.

Edu accomplished countless remarkable things throughout his life and, above all, he adored his family. Pat, his children and grandchildren were his center and constant inspiration. My heavy heart goes out to them. It is tragic that Edu’s life ended so soon and I cannot put into words how much I will miss him.

Dear Edu, the one with the biggest heart and the kindest smile, I respected you more than words can say. I thank you for your friendship and will never forget you.
