Evelyn Leone Hein went home to be with our Lord April 18, 2012, at the tender age of 93. She was born to Charles and Lillian Stockdale August 20, 1918 on the farm in York Township, Minnesota. The second of nine children, she was named for an uncle what served in WWI and preferred to be called “Lee”.
Times were hard on the farm and at 15 years of age, left home to help a family friend who had lost his wife during childbirth. Burt Miller had four children, the oldest not that much different in age from Leone. Soon Burt Miller and “Lee” were married and eventually left the Miller family farm and bought a small grocery store. Lee really enjoyed working with the public and the store was a success, but Burt missed life on the farm and made Leone sell the store. Deeply disappointed, Leone met Emery Hein and eventually divorced Burt Miller.
After a trip to Alaska, Leone and Emery moved to Seattle, where she worked in the cafeteria in the Bon Marche, where again she took pride in her work and enjoyed her time working with the public.
Early in the 50’s Mom and Dad bought their first home in Mountlake Terrace for $5,500.00.fully furnished. During this time they made many dear friends that evoked many fond memories. This truly was the best time in her life. Mom always wanted a family of her own and she found this with our Dad.
Leone was a devout Seventh Day Adventist and she made sure her kids received a Christian education. Mom and Dad had a fondness for music and Mom stretched the rules a bit on the Sabbath, allowing us to listen to Elvis and Johnny Cash gospel music. Sunday usually was roast beef with us all around the dinner table and proceeded by grace. A very special memory!
Emery Hein passed away January 19, 1977. After his passing, Leone bought a home in Silver Lake Washington. She lived there with her youngest son, Doug until 1994.
Because of health issues, Leone moved to Gold Bar to be with her son Chuck and his wife Debbie where she had her own apartment.
Debbie my wife was her tireless caregiver. Mom thrived on the love, care and attention given by Chuck and Debbie. She would eagerly anticipate the many visits from her daughter Bobbi and son Doug. She especially enjoyed going with Bobbi to thrift stores, yard sales, and searching for a good bargain.
During this time she was a pleasure to talk to when she shared her memories of life on the farm, at the store and shared how her life had changed in her lifetime.
She loved most everyone and almost always had a pleasant disposition even when faced with her many health problems. She was always so grateful for even the smallest thing. I still have a special memory of her telling me “Thanks for everything”, when I would go back to the house for the evening, because I believe she wasn’t sure she would be there in the morning.
Leone was preceded in death by her husband Emery and son Doug. She is survived by her daughter Bobbi Thompkins of Loon Lake Washington, son Chuck Hein of Gold Bar Washington, one sister Genevieve McNiff of Austin Minnesota and many grandchildren.
Now she’s gone and we’ll all miss her. In my heart I know she is in heaven with Dad and Doug right now. Bless you Mom.
