8 Sep 1930 – 25 Apr 2020
At 9:00am on Saturday, April 25th 2020 at Aegis assisted living in Shoreline, Washington and with his daughter Kristen by his side, Glenn Allen Hoiby peacefully passed away from natural causes. He was 89 years old.
Glenn was born on the 8th of September 1930 in Vancouver, BC. He was an only child, adopted as a baby by Hilda and Cliff Hoiby.
Soon, the family moved to the United States, first settling down in Kent, Washington, then moving to their home on 91st & Roosevelt in Seattle – a home the family has to this day.
Glenn attended school at Olympic View Elementary and later graduated from Roosevelt High in Seattle. He then earned a degree in accounting from the University of Washington in 1952, where he umpired the University of Washington baseball team.
While in college, Glenn held several jobs including a part time police officer in Ballard and a logging truck driver – which gave him the opportunity to pick blackberries along the Washington coast for his favorite blackberry pie.
Glenn was drafted into the Army during the Korean war, but due to a back injury, he was sent to Germany instead of Korea.
While in the Army, Glenn was in charge of the payroll. He also taught accounting for the University of Chicago, for the Army.
Glenn came back to Seattle after he was discharged from the Army, where he worked a variety of accounting jobs, until he ended up with Friedman, Lobe & Block – eventually becoming a partner in the firm.
Through good friends, Glenn met his wife-to-be, Maurine and they were married on September 12th 1958.
Soon, they were blessed with 2 children: Kristen (born 1960) and Robert (born 1963).
The family lived in Seattle, then moved to Lake Forest Park where they built a house, which was their home for many years.
In the early 1970s, Glenn went out on his own, opening a CPA firm that he operated for many years – often working 14-hour days throughout the tax season.
Glenn eventually sold his firm to another accounting company (Huebner & Dooley) and after working with them as partners until the late 1990’s, he retired.
For more than 50 years, Glenn was a member of the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants (WSCPA) – something Glenn was very proud of.
In their retirement years, the highlight was Glenn and Maurine’s trip to Norway to visit relatives and to see their son who was studying abroad.
Glenn was a creature of habit:
He read the Seattle Times newspaper every day, religiously.
He also watched sports incessantly – never missing a hometown game (he was a Huskies season ticket-holder for many years).
And there is likely no episode of 60 Minutes that Glenn has missed since this program began airing in 1968.
A few of his “favorites” included the color blue, big-band music, smoked salmon and Saltine crackers with milk.
When Glenn was 70 years old, he did track down and meet his birth mother and he also discovered that he had a half-sister and 3 half-brothers – one of whom was enjoying Saltine crackers with milk!
Glenn will always be remembered as a kind and gentle man and deeply missed by all who knew him.
His daughter, Kristen will miss her dad’s daily phone calls and their visits waited for with excitement. And his son, Robert will miss watching sports with his dad, like he did since he was little, with the TV blasting.
Glenn was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Hilda and Cliff Hoiby, and his wife of 63 years, Maurine Hoiby.
And those who remain behind to cherish his memory include his children, Robert and Kristen Hoiby.
Glenn’s final resting place will be next to his wife, Maurine at Crown Hill cemetery in Seattle with a private graveside service on May 6th 2020.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at Aegis Living in Shoreline for his family and many friends there.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in memory of Glenn to the American Red Cross at 1900 25th Ave South Seattle, WA 98144.
