Irene Smith passed away at Marysville Care Center from Covid pneumonia on January 4, 2021. On November 6, 2020 Irene was transferred from the hospital to Marysville Care Center for physical rehabilitation. On December 25, 2020 a staff person at Marysville Care Center called Irene's daughter and said Irene tested Covid positive.
Irene was born in 1927 in Tacoma, Washington. After high school she moved to Seattle then to Alderwood Manor where she and her husband Bill raised their three daughters. In 1969 Irene married Elmer and they moved to Michigan when he went to work at Ford Motor Company. Together with family they enjoyed camping, going to auto races, to the Grand Ole Opry and visiting out of state relatives.
In 1996 Irene and Elmer returned to Washington after he retired from Ford. Elmer passed away in 2001 and Irene moved to Marysville to be closer to family. In December 2011 she moved into an assisted living apartment at Grandview Village in Marysville. Irene's family is grateful to the staff at Grandview Village for supporting her the past nine years and will miss them too.
Irene was an excellent homemaker and a fabulous cook, making everything from scratch. Among the family favorites were her chicken and dumplings, lemon meringue pie, and home baked bread. Irene was also an accomplished seamstress and made clothes for her daughters as they grew up.
Irene is survived by her oldest daughter, seven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. She would be happy to hear that another great great grandchild is due in August. Irene was preceded in death by her only sibling Kenneth, husband Elmer, daughters Carol and Renee, and sons-in-law John, Charlie, and Fred.
Irene was in the care of Purdy & Walters at Floral Hills. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic there was no service. On January 12, 2021 Irene was laid to rest next to Elmer. At that time family was at Irene's grave listening to their recordings of Beyond the Sunset, Waltz Across Texas, Good Night Irene, and One More Day in remembrance of her and her love of bluegrass and country music.
