John R. Schalow was born on July 16, 1939, in Conconully, WA, to his father, Claude R. Schalow and mother Beulah E.L. Thornton. He lived an active life surrounding himself with people that he loved. Upon graduating Marysville High Schiil in 1958, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy that July. After 4 years of active duty aboard the USS Prairie (AD-15) as a Petty Officer and 2 years in the reserves, he was honorably discharged on July 6, 1964.
He began his career in construction with WSDOT in 1962. In September 1989, after 27 years, he retired from WSDOT and moved on to other contracts. He spent over 34 years working construction in total as an inspector on many state and federal projects. Most of which he was Chief Inspector and in charge of many duties. He took pride in everything he had done and accomplished in his career. One of his joys was to visit places and roadways he helped construct.
John was baptized on May 2, 1965 in The First Methodist Church in Burlington, WA. Several years later, he married Bonnioe Darlene Cairns Schauman on April 29, 1970. Together they raised their 6 children; Leona Stumph, Kenneth Schauman, Gerald Schauman, James Schauman, Tracy Ramstead, and John Russel Schalow. Their children blessed them with many grandchildren and in time they were blessed with many great grandchildren as well. With all the kids, John and Bonnie loved taking them placed. They enjoyed hunting, fishing, clam digging, picnics, and gatherings as a family. John also loved playing Cribbage and his long telephone conversations. They would talk about stories of hunting and days gone by.
Being as active as he was, John found himself a member of many organizations and often volunteered. He was a member of the Marysville Moose Lodge #1845 for over 50 years, the Granite Falls American Legion Post #125 for 41 years, and the Granite Falls Eagles #3358 for 43 years. As a member of the Eagles, he served as the Worthy President in 1980 and 1981. He also enjoyed volunteering to dress up and serve as Santa Clause with Bonnie beside him as Mrs. Clause. Mr. and Mrs. Clause celebrated 51 years of marriage this year.
