Murphy D. Lucas was born to Manuel and Rosie Lee Coleman on November 15, 1933. She was number four of thirteen children. She graduated from Cleveland Colored Consolidated High School in 1951, where she was active in the choir and was a majorette.
In 1952 she married her childhood sweetheart, Moyes Lucas, Sr. while he was on active duty in the United States Air Force. Their travels landed the family in Spokane, Washington, where they lived a number of years and were members of the Calvary Baptist Church. In 1966, they moved the family to western Washington.
Settling in Everett, they started an electrical contracting business in 1969 – M & M Electric, which after incorporation in 1972 became Luke's M&M Electric, Inc. Both were active members of Second Baptist Church. They served on the Deacon Board and were choir members. Murphy was known for her beautiful soprano voice. She also served on the Trustee Board. Murphy was instrumental in beginning the Scholarship Auxiliary at Second Baptist along with other lady deacons. She was active in her community as a member of United Way and Church Women United.
After her husband's death in 2000, Murphy lived part-time in Seattle with her daughter, Gwen, and made it fulltime in 2006. While living in Seattle she was an active member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and the Central Area Senior Center, (CASC), where she was a member of the CASC Sliders Dance Troup and a founding member and worker in the CASC's thrift store. Murphy moved back to Snohomish County in 2012, residing in Mill Creek at Merrill Gardens Senior Community. At Merrill Gardens you would often find her singing, exercising, working on a puzzle or sending out "get well" cards to the residents. She spent her last few months living with her daughter, Cheryl and her family.
Murphy leaves to cherish her memory: sisters, Marie, Fannie, Pearl and Betty; brothers, Floyd and Manuel Jr.; her children, Gwen, Eric, (Beth), Moyes Jr. (Aya), Cheryl (Charlie), and Mark; Grandchildren: Michael, Michelle (David), Joel, Jared (Laurel), Evan, Kia, Adam, Nicholas, Benjamin, Peter and great-grandchildren: Emyiah, Lily, and Jared Everett; and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
