Mark was always smart. At two, he amazed everyone by memorizing the names of the books of the Bible in both English and his parents’ Filipino dialect. He was the best piano player of the Ocampo children. He was also amongst the top 10% in the state when he graduated from high school in 1995.
Mark was very competitive. Accepting defeat was not easy for him, and it didn’t happen often. Usually the rest of us had to cheat at Words with Friends in order to beat him. He gave the correct question to almost all the answers when watching Jeopardy!
Mark was a hard worker who always did more without being asked. He worked at many places, mostly in retail. He managed stores and departments and, most recently, was a lead at Nordstrom Rack. Mark’s connection with Nordstrom goes back to him being a toddler, when one of the Nordstrom family (a member of dad’s church in Tacoma) insisted on personally taking the Ocampo children to Nordstrom for shoes.
Despite chronic health ailments, including eczema and asthma, Mark never complained but persevered. He was independent and always there for friends and family.
On September 23, after a 14-year break, Mark enrolled at Edmonds Community College to finish his degree. He was excited and, to no one’s surprise, scored very high on tests. He quickly made friends who were eager to have him a part of their study group.
Mark had a very large group of friends, as well as a close circle of best friends. He enjoyed watching sports (Go Hawks!), playing with his nephews, singing karaoke, winning at trivia night, shopping, reading, and hanging out at his home, at a bar, or on a camping or hiking trip.
Mark is survived by his parents, J. Allan & Zenny Ocampo, his older brother Jason, his sisters Trisha (spouse Jeff) and Erica Jill (spouse Bryan), and his youngest brother Justin (spouse Xinxin). Mark also leaves four nephews that loved him dearly: Caleb, Noah, Bronson, and Wyatt.
Mark's memorial service will be held at Ronald United Methodist Church, 17839 Aurora Avenue North, Shoreline, WA 98133, on Saturday, November 1, 2014.
Memorials will be donated to the Good Seed Library in the Philippines. Please make checks out to Ronald UMC and designate Mark Ocampo memorial.
