Peggy Lou Williamson was promoted to dance with the angels on July 4th. She was born Peggy Lou Coulter on the banks of the Cowlitz River in Cowlitz Gardens, Kelso, Washington, November 15, 1932. Her parents, Wayne and Grace Coulter, were originally from Dayton Washington. She was named “Peggy Lou” by her older sister Barbara. Peggy grew up at Rocky Point north of Kelso on a wooded farm, which became her playground where she developed a passion for flowers, plants and gardening. She graduated from Kelso High School in 1950, married Manford Williamson in 1951 and moved to Seattle WA in 1953. She initially worked for the welfare Department as a Dictaphone transcriber. Later Peggy went to work for Seattle Public Schools where she provided career counseling for high school students, 12 years at an alternative High School and 12 years at Roosevelt High School.
Peggy enjoyed her time at Roosevelt and felt great satisfaction in helping the students chart their career paths. Peggy and Manford raised two daughters Jayne and Sandy and helped raise two foster sons, David and Daniel MacMillan. On her retirement she became a “Master Gardener” and joined and became very active in the Alderwood Garden Club. Gardening was her passion. She planted and maintained almost half of our acre and a quarter home with her gardening skills. Peggy loved to travel. She loved meeting other people, learning and exploring other cultures and customs. When she wasn’t gardening she was traveling with trips to Europe, Asia, New Zealand, Alaska, Florida, England, Malta etc. She also loved to Dance. Square Dancing in her younger years for 10 years, and dancing to Rock & Roll music well into her 70’s.
Following in her Dad’s footsteps Peg was also an avid baseball fan enjoying many, many Mariners games at the stadium and on TV. At the age of forty she started downhill skiing which she enjoyed for many years. Her greatest pleasure while skiing was to stop at the top of the hill and take in the views, sometimes forgetting to go down hill. After learning to Ski Peggy took up snowmobiling where she cruised many snow bound logging roads in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Peggy also loved flying, especially in a small plane at lower altitudes. As our pilot would say, Peggy’s nose imprint was still on the airplane window. She loved going to Darrington, WA for the Bluegrass festival looking at Whitehorse Mountain while listening to the music. She especially loved listening to impromptu jam sessions throughout the Park.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents Wayne and Grace Coulter and numerous Aunts and Uncles.
She is survived by Manford Williamson, Husband of 60 years, Daughter Jayne Williamson Olson and husband Kevin Olson, of Seattle, Daughter Sandy Porter and husband Doug Porter, of Phoenix, AZ, Sister Barbara Phillips, of Kelso, WA, David & Daniel MacMillan, Foster Sons, Seattle area, Betty Magnuson and Helen McDaniel, Aunties from Kelso, WA and numerous Cousins.
A private Family service will be followed by a “Celebration of Her Life” August 25, 2012 in her Garden.
