March 8, 2005 – January 19, 2021
Sophia Margaret Karpowitz left this mortal existence and returned to her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, January 19, 2021. Sophie was a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and friend who will be greatly missed. She was a beautiful, thoughtful, kind, caring, tender-hearted young woman. In her short time on earth, her vibrant personality touched the lives of all who knew and loved her.
Sophie was born on March 8, 2005, to loving parents Daniel James Karpowitz and Abigail Elizabeth McCutcheon. Right from the start, her bright-eyed intelligence was evident. Her spirited, curious personality soon manifested itself as well. She was full of life and energy, and her quick, spontaneous smile would light up a room.
From an early age, she loved reading. As she grew, it became one of her great passions. She devoured books at a ridiculous pace. Her contemplative, analytical nature made her a great conversationalist on a wide range of topics. Even as a young girl, she enjoyed listening to news broadcasts, and she would readily share her opinions about national and world events.
Sophie valued learning and excelled as a student. She was not afraid to pursue challenging courses. She was a talented writer and mathematical whiz. She was a great tutor for her brothers. Not only did she excel academically, she also developed and refined her many artistic skills. She became a gifted cellist and taught herself to play the violin, guitar, and bass guitar. Music was an important part of her life. It became a way for her to express herself and her thoughts beyond what words could articulate. She enjoyed collecting and playing records of her favorite artists, which included classic rock, alternative rock and jazz. Sophie was becoming a talented artist and developed her own unique sketching and digital illustration style. She had fun being involved in school drama productions. She was a member of her high school’s Technology Student Association.
Sophie had a creative mind. At an early age she built impressive structures out of cardboard boxes and wooden blocks that provided countless hours of imaginative play for both her and her brothers. She could make the simplest things seem adventurous and fun. As she grew, her innovations expanded to include impressive STEM projects at school. She liked arts and crafts projects which she would lovingly give to others. Sophie was fun to be around with her creativity, wit, and sense of humor.
Sophie was always up for new adventures. Whether it was a merry-go-round when she was little or the latest roller coaster when she was a teen, she looked forward to the thrill of the ride. She enjoyed spending time outdoors. Exploring the beach, hiking, camping, riding bikes, swimming, and waterskiing were just a few of things she enjoyed doing. Sophie had a deep appreciation for nature and this beautiful world. She loved animals of all kinds, especially dogs. She was affectionally referred to as the “Dog Whisperer.” Having a dog of her own was her heart’s desire. That dream was finally fulfilled when she was 10 years old, and Felix came into her life. They immediately bonded, and he was a source of immense joy for her.
Sophie knew the importance of family and friends. She was a loving, supportive daughter, sister, and friend. She created strong, meaningful relationships with her grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She believed that families can be together forever and wanted to be someone of whom her family would be proud. She is now with a grandfather who loved her so much and is taking her by the hand as she continues to progress through the eternities.
She is survived by her father Dan and his wife Rachael, her mother Abby, her brothers Jonas and Elliot, and her dogs Felix and Oscar.
