I’m so shocked to learn of Aleta’s death and can’t believe the news. To her sister-in-law and others in her family, I offer my sympathies.

Aleta welcomed me to the Social Security branch office, in Griffin, GA, after I had worked with her mother, Fleta, in the Macon, GA, district office. Always pensive, kind and reserved, we stayed in touch for years, when she moved to Atlanta and other federal jobs. After we moved to NC, she even called me unexpectedly, when in Raleigh on federal business; and we enjoyed an early breakfast to catch up on families and careers.

I regret that we’ve not talked in a long time, but I do recall two fun memories from those early days, in Griffin, that still bring a smile:

When Aleta bought a Mercedes-Benz sedan, we laughed that her father would be proud that she’d been so frugal on a civil servant’s salary to purchase such a luxury auto. Conversely, Aleta really surprised me when she returned from vacation one year and told me about her trip, by herself, to a “singles” resort in the Caribbean!

Her generally serious demeanor just did not match her stories of the silly games and social mixers in which she had embarrassingly participated. Mysterious as she always could be, such a frivolous expense for that rowdy vacation just didn’t match a hardworking, frugal and single gal, who drove a MB sedan to the federal building every day in small town Georgia!

I have never known anyone quite like Aleta. In fact, I’ve truly never known any other woman, whose name is Aleta, but I do know that “Aleta” combines “Alton” + “Fleta.” (Their loving creation has been a fine mixture of the best qualities of each of her beloved parents.)

Rest in peace, Aleta, and may the reunion with your nuclear family be a joyous homecoming indeed.
