I am a 68 year old African American male Grassroots Republican who is a native Maconite through my Paternal Family connections and was Blessed to have Known Dr. Youman as a Community from 1995 up 2011 as Community Patron. I did Independant research fully Utilizing the Reference resources at the Jack Tarver Library in the Field of Theology, Philosophy  and law for which I could Aquire a Working Knowledge of principles that for which the Framework that was used to mould my Maternal African America Mullato culture through the agency of the Freedman Aid Society of the White Methodist Episcopal Church North that Founded among their Network of Churches and Missions School in the former Confederate States of America for the Emancipated Slaves both white and Black in 1866. My maternal Family roots And Black Experience was Moulded by Clark College and Gammon Theological Seminary to train Scholars and Black Men Methodist Theologians commencing in 1888. My mothers neighborhood was the first black middle Class neighborhood in Atlanta Fulton County the be planned around the Original South Atlanta Campus in 1870  where the people owned their own homes. Gammon and Clark had an Intergrated falculty who live on the Campus mainly From New England, and the Western Reserve Region of Ohio. The Teachers at Both Clark and Gammon were Classical Scholars like Dr. Youman. I shared my story with Dr. Youman for which he could connect his own Northern Heritage with that of the White Northern missionary Influence in my Maternal Black Experience. Dr. Youman was able to give me some Valuable insight as to the instruction that the White Missionaries from the North in Moulding my Black Identity with European Concepts. He told me about his father being a headmaster at a School and being a son of an headmaster he was fortunate to have attended Philip Exeter and Was a classmate of Henry Ford decendant, and that He earn his Undergraduate, master and PhD from Yale University. God Bless his family.

I will always be grateful to Eliot for the support he gave me when I became his successor in Latin and Classical Literature at Mercer University in 1997. Not only did he leave me an office full of books, but also invaluable advice on how to conduct my classes at Mercer. He even took me around the state of Georgia to meet our colleagues in the Classics at other universities. In addition to the Classics, we shared one other common interest: tennis. For many years, we had a standing arrangement for a game of tennis after class on Friday afternoon. Those who have ever played with Eliot know that he was a master of the game, well into his late seventies. His drop shot was legendary! I will fondly remember all my interactions with Eliot, both on and off the court.

I minored in Greek at Mercer (graduated 1978), which means I had several classes with Dr. Youman. After we read a lot of Homer, he allowed me and a couple of other students to read some New Testament Greek. He was a brilliant man and a fine professor. I am sorry to hear of his passing. He made his mark and leaves a legacy. Blessings be upon his family.

Eliot was an excellent colleague in the foreign language department at Mercer. He was warm and friendly, and we shared some fine conversations on mutual literary interests. He was a man of conscience and compassion, which issued from his faith. He also was a formidable foe on the tennis court and was able to scamper nimbly all over it up to a ripe old age. Needless to say, he was widely read and very bright indeed. I shall miss him but fondly remember him.

I appreciated that my dad made me independent. I am glad he took me camping and read to me and  introduced tennis to me. I  was happy to have him as my dad,l will miss him dearly.





Betty we were sorry to hear about Elliot's passing. He will be missed by our family. Know that we are praying for you and your family during this time 🙏🙏🙏.


Dr. Youman taught me Classical Latin in 1983/4. He was a good man with lots of dry humor. 

I remember so many of his sayings...
