A visitation for Billie Jean Greer will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2024 from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm at Central Fellowship Baptist Church, followed immediately by a Celebration of Life, with Dr. Rodney Queen and Dr. Craig Bailey officiating. Burial will be immediately after the service at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, 7070 Houston Rd, Macon, GA.
Almost a century ago, Billie J. Greer set out on a lifelong trek that would bring her across the paths of many generations of family, friends, and church family. In many ways she set a pace with which her contemporaries and some generations following could not compete, before ending her journey as the last of her family's generation on June 14, 2024, at the age of 94.
Billie was born the youngest of ten siblings in Mississippi to the late E.L. and Ruth Dodson Partee. Raised in Georgia, she married Don Greer in 1950. Aside from a stint that Don served in the US Army, they were virtually inseparable until his passing in 2015.
She retired from the Bibb County Board of Education after serving as one of the first female bus drivers in the county. She was an active member of Central Fellowship Baptist Church and a member of the Forever Young Sunday School Class.
One of her favorite questions to ask people was if they had heard about her Pride and Joy: her daughter Donna Thornton (William); grandchildren Matthew Thornton (Katie), Jennifer Ferguson (Dustyn); and her great grandchildren Autumn Thornton and Grady and Felix Ferguson, who had trouble saying “Great Grandma” and consequently bestowed on her the beloved moniker, “Grape.”
In Grape’s later years, one of her most steadfast companions was Yogi, a rescue dog who was spoiled with treats and was chauffeured around town in her car. He took up residence in her apartment where they kept each other company for many years.
In honor of this partnership, we ask that you donate to Pawsome Southern Rescue in lieu of flowers.
