The Rev. Copeland Howard Hammond, 91, formally of Macon and Ft Valley, GA, went to be with Christ on August 15, 2021. Copeland was preceded in death by his late wife, Marguerite Spikes Hammond, who he was happily married to for 63 years. Their surviving children are, James Howard Hammond (Teresa), Lizella; Brenda Chapman (Paul), Griffin; Cathy Steele, Byron; Grandchildren Jocko Hammond, Casey Hammond, Aron Hammond, Jaana Chapman, Kayla Chapman and Rachel Pelt (Michael); and three great-grandchildren, Soulin, Valen and Ava Hammond. Their son, William (Billy) Copeland, recently passed away on August 17, 2021, leaving his wife Tammy.
After the death of his late wife, Marguerite, Copeland met Ms. Martha Mathews at his home church, Chamlee. They married in December of 2015 and were blessed with nearly 5 years of shared joy and companionship, until Martha’s death in Aug 2020. Through the union with Martha, Copeland added a daughter Dena Todd (Tommy); and grandchildren, Scott Todd, Kelli Todd Kelly, Lindsay (Jason) Bowden and a niece, Vicky Brannon.
On July 7, 1930, Copeland, the baby of ten children, was born at home in Sargent, GA, to the late William Ervin and Ada Dingler Hammond. Copeland is preceded in death by his parents, six sisters and two brothers. He is survived by one brother, Johnny Hammond.
Copeland served in the U. S. Army from 1951 to 1956. On June 23, 1961 Copeland accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. As an ordained minister, he pastored four different churches for a combined 28 years. Copeland was employed with Armstrong Cork Company for 18.5 years, but later retired with 25 years as a Deputy and serving as Sheriff with the Bibb County Civil Court.
Rev. Copeland Hammond was a member of Chamlee Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a Godly man and a good provider for his family. He was best known for his sense of humor, a gentle presence, and his endearing laughter. Yet, his deepest sincerity was his work for the Lord.
Copeland and Billy’s visitation is at Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home on Saturday, August 21, 2021. Due to Covid illness, the family will not be available to greet people, but please know we appreciate your time to remember our loved ones. We do ask all visitors to practice social distancing for their own protection.
Graveside services will be held at Macon Memorial Park, 3969 Mercer University Drive, Macon, GA, on Sunday, August 22, 2021, at 2:00 PM for both, Copeland and his son William (Billy) Copeland Hammond with the Rev. Bryan McPherson and Rev. Paul Chapman. Again, we will practice social distancing and request masks to be worn for all of our protection during the service.
